Black Horton, Elizabeth

BLACK HORTON, Elizabeth

1930 - 2025

Elizabeth Black Horton passed away peacefully on September 4, at the Wales Home in Cleveland, QC where she had lived for the last 6 years.
Born in 1930, her parents were John and Nettie Black of Sherbrooke. She grew up with a love of playing and watching hockey and singing jazz alongside the radio with her brother John.
Following graduation from Royal Victoria Hospital School, Montreal, she worked as a registered nurse caring for others with compassion and dedication.
Betty married Charles H Horton in Sherbrooke on June 1, 1957. They soon moved to Burlington VT, where their 2 sons Charles III and John were born.
In 1962, the family moved to Portland Maine, where they lived for 35 years.  As an active member of the historic Stroudwater neighborhood, Betty was instrumental in helping to nationally register historic homes. Betty also had a gift for making others feel welcome. They often had overnight guests and their sons’ friends always enjoyed visiting, as she was a source of great wisdom and humor…. as well as being a wonderful cook.
After her husband Charles passed in 1996, she made the decision to move back to North Hatley, where she had fond memories of summers spent at the family cottage on Lake Massawippi.  Over the next twenty-one years, she reunited with old friends,  made many new ones, volunteered at the local library, and found peace in the place that had always felt like home.
Betty is survived by 2 sons:  Charles III (Peggy) and John.  She also has 2 grandsons: Charles IV (Kala)  and Wesley (Haylee) and has 2 great-grandchildren, Charles V and Quinn.  She is predeceased by her parents and brother John.
Betty will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend whose love and wisdom lives on in those she touched.
Burial will be at Mt Pleasant cemetery in St. Johnsbury, VT at a future date.
