POLLOCK, Gary

1936 - 2025

One month before his 89th birthday, Gary Pollock passed suddenly surrounded family in Sherbrooke on 13 July 2025.

He is survived by his wife Vivian Pollock (Dole), his son Andrew (Cathy) and late daughter Teresa, his granddaughters Jess (Sophie) and Amanda (Matthew), grandsons Gary and Matthew, great granddaughter Emma and great grandson Ben.

Gary, the son of Matt and Alice Pollock, was born on August 1 1936 in Montreal. He grew up on a farm on Chem. Lay in Melbourne. After working in Richmond, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent most of career in Halifax and Ottawa. With thirty years of service, he retired with the rank of Commander. He then joined Lockheed Martin for the Canadian Patrol Frigate project. After a couple years of retirement, he and Vivian finally settled back in Richmond at the Ross (Wales Home).

As a teenager he developed an interest in railroads and combined that with his photographic hobby. He went on many train excursions taking pictures and developing the film himself. He also dove into the world of model trains. He built train layout at four of the homes he lived in. In Halifax he helped create a train museum where they secured a steam engine, caboose, passenger car and mail car. The mail car held an extensive model train layout.

Gary also invested time in genealogy where was able to trace the Pollock clan’s arrival to Canada in 1834 from Derry Ireland, George and Mary Pollock, 6th Range of Gore, Argenteuil County QC.

He continued with skills he learned in the navy by obtaining his Amateur radio operator certification and strived to develop his Mores code skills. He participated in RAC Emergency Readiness exercises and enjoyed chatting with other operators around the world.

His involvement with both the Royal Canadian Legion and the NATO Veterans Organization filled his days. He very much enjoyed giving his time to benefit the community. He also wanted to join in the community by improving his French skills. He was successful in passing several intermediate levels of French instruction.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Cass Funeral Home, 295 Rue Principale S, Richmond, QC. Reception to follow at the Legion. There will be no visitation. Internment at a later date.

To invoke his memory, listen to “Heart of Oak” by the Stadacona Band.

Donations to the Wales home would be appreciated.

I would like to offer my condolences to the whole family! Gary was my father Robert's cousin, son of Charles Gordon and Joyce Margaret. I had the chance to meet him a few years ago with his wife Vivian! I have very good memories of them ! His departure saddens me enormously and I understand your pain.
